Welcome to
Legacy Cats. We are Fanciers and Supporters of the Maine Coon
Polydactyl in Ontario, Canada. Our family has had pets, cats, dogs
and horses for as long as I can remember. We became
acquainted with the Maine Coons in 2003 and have been taken by their
nature ever since. The question we are most asked is "What is
a Polydactyl?" The short answer is the mitten pawed
cat.
The Maine Coon's history starts in the early 1600's along the eastern
seaboard. These large cats were cherished for their hunting
abilities and served as ships cats, warehouse cats and great hunters on
the farms. The Maine Coon Polydactyl was especially cherished, as
the larger paws enabled this cat's hunting ability.
There are many stories and legends surrounding these cats from their
origins to their acts of helping feed their human families. They
say all legends are based in truth. Once you get to know these
cats, you will see how these legends may have started and the wonderful
legacy that remains today.
